Why I write

Research and writing are extensions of the same work I do in a counselling room: ways of staying curious, questioning what we think we know, and contributing ideas that might help us care for one another more skillfully.

Much of what matters in this work does not fit neatly into a session or a journal article, so I write toward it from several directions at once, in academic and professional publications, essays, and practical resources for practitioners and for people navigating these experiences themselves.

Themes in the work

Substance use and family experience

Writing that grew out of doctoral research into how families understand and respond to substance use, and what changes when their knowledge is treated as expertise.

Grief, loss, and identity change

Essays and resources on losses that are hard to name, grief that does not resolve on schedule, and the shifts in identity that follow.

Psychedelic preparation and integration

Therapeutic resources in development for preparation, harm reduction, and integration of psychedelic and non-ordinary states of consciousness.

Relational and narrative practice

Practitioner-facing material on narrative and collaborative approaches, and on bringing lived knowledge and professional knowledge into conversation.

Where to read the work now

New books, workbooks, and therapeutic resources will be listed here as they are published. In the meantime, Field Notes is where the thinking appears first, and the letters are where new work is announced.
